Explained – How Music Can Benefit Your Pregnancy!

Various studies conducted over the past two decades have demonstrated that music may reduce the stress, anxiety, and depression that many women experience during their pregnancy.

While music therapy is now an established health profession, experts are still unsure about whether music affects the fetal development of babies.

However, in recent studies the benefits are profound for both mother and child!

Benefits for Mum

A study of 236 pregnant women in Taiwan shows that the participants who listened to music for 30 minutes per day for two weeks significantly reduced their stress, anxiety, and depression, compared with participants who did not.

Study author Chung-Hey Chen, who is now based at the National Cheng Kung University, says “any intervention that reduces these problems is to be welcomed. Our study shows that listening to suitable music provides a simple, cost-effective and non-invasive way of reducing stress, anxiety and depression during pregnancy.”

Not only can music help relieve stress for expectant mothers, there are also ample benefits for the unborn child!

Benefits for Bub

According to various studies carried out my medical experts, unborn babies who were exposed to music while in the womb showed a significant improvement in their overall mental, cognizant, behavioural, sensory, psychological and emotional development as compared to those who were not exposed to any music while they were in the womb.

A link between what the baby hears while in utero and their preferences after birth has also been demonstrated among numerous studies.

Newborn babies can recognise their mother’s voice and find this calming and soothing, therefore it is logical to assume that any music that might be familiar to them may also have the same soothing effect, and aid sleep and relaxation.

What Type of Music Should I Play for My Baby?

Soothing, classical music and nature sounds are believed to be calming, while louder types of music may startle the baby.

If you want to be certain that your baby hears the music from inside the womb, you can play it on your headphones and place the same on your belly, just remember to keep the music at a low volume!

Choose music that you find soothing and make use of the time to relax and bond with your unborn baby.

Overall, listening to music is a great way to relax and feel positive, and the right music and sounds can be a benefit to your pregnancy, as well as the ageing mind.
