Enjoy The Easy Yet Delicious Recipe of Rajma Chawal At Home!

Red kidney beans, which are generally used as a main ingredient of the Mexican patty or salad, in India, it is typically famous for the rich gravy. In fact, Indians might not prefer red kidney bean salad, but the authentic gravy is something to die for.

Speaking of Punjabi community, Rajma Chawal is known to be one of the popular dishes of Delhi. You might just fall in love with the aromatic fragrance and taste of red kidney beans.

Let’s start with the ingredients first.

  • Red kidney beans
  • Dry spices: salt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, rajma masala, mango powder
  • Dry red chili
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • Tomatoes
  • Lemon
  • Boiled potatoes
  • Oil/ghee
  • Whole Garam Masala: coriander seeds, cinnamon stick, bay leaves, cloves, peppercorns
  • Asafetida

To prepare the recipe, follow the mentioned steps.


Wash the red kidney beans and soak them overnight. Next morning, add rajma and fresh water in the pressure cooker and boil till 6 whistles. Now switch off the flame and let it cool.


Now, take another pressure cooker. Add oil/ghee in the pan. Add all the whole garam masala along with asafetida and ginger garlic finely grinded. Mix it well till the raw smell of garlic is gone. Now, add the finely chopped onions in the cooker with whole dry red chili. Cook it till the onion turns pink.

Add all the dry spices and finely chopped tomatoes in the pan. Add some water to make thick gravy. Now add the cooked Rajma in the pressure cooker and whistle it 2 times. Switch off the flame and let it cool.

When you open the cooker, you will notice that the oil might be floating on the top, which means that the gravy is cooked properly. Garnish the gravy with fresh coriander. And well, Rajma is incomplete without Jeera rice.

So serve it with steamy rice and enjoy this recipe with your friends. This recipe is quite simple and can be prepared easily. And if you are planning a full dining menu you can add paneer starters, this recipe along with Raita, papad and some GulabJamun for desserts.
